The MHD Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability: A Two-Dimensional Numerical Study
We have carried out two-dimensional simulations of the nonlinear evolution of unstable sheared magnetohydrodynamic flows. These calculations extend the earlier work of Miura (1984) and consider periodic sections of flows containing aligned magnetic fields. Two equal density, compressible fluids are separated by a shear layer with a hyperbolic tangent velocity profile. We considered two cases: a...
متن کاملKelvin-helmholtz Instability by Sph
In this paper, we have modeled the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) problem of an incompressible two-phase immiscible fluid in a stratified inviscid shear flow with interfacial tension using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The time dependent evolution of the two-fluid interface over a wide range of Richardson number (Ri) and for three different density ratios is numerically inve...
متن کاملOn Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in superfluids
The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in superfluids is discussed, based on the first experimental observation of such instability at the interface between superfluid He-A and superfluid He-B [1]. We discuss why the Kelvin-Helmholtz criterion, the Landau critical velocity for nucleation of ripplons, and the free energy consideration all give different values for the instability treshold. 1 Classical...
متن کاملOn the Weakly Nonlinear Kelvin–helmholtz Instability of Tangential Discontinuities in Mhd
We derive a quadratically nonlinear equation that describes the motion of a tangential discontinuity in incompressible magnetohydrodynamics near the onset of a Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. We show that nonlinear effects enhance the instability and give a criterion for it to occur in terms of a longitudinal strain of the fluid motion along the discontinuity.
متن کاملThe Mhd Kelvin-helmholtz Instability Iii: the Role of Sheared Magnetic Field in Planar Flows
We have carried out simulations of the nonlinear evolution of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability for compressible fluids in 2 1 2 -dimensions, extending our previous work by Frank et al. (1996) and Jones et al. (1997). In the present work we have simulated flows in the x− y plane in which a “sheared” magnetic field of uniform strength “smoothly” rotates across a thi...
